![]() ![]() But even if the final version is something of a muddle (supposedly entire characters and subplots were removed entirely), it’s still an entertaining muddle. Part of that is understandable a week before the movie was released, which once again reteams Murphy’s streetwise hustler with Nick Nolte’s hardened cop, Paramount cut 25 minutes from the runtime. Released eight years after the original film helped establish the buddy cop template and cemented Eddie Murphy as a big-time star (in his first movie, no less), “48 Hrs.” debuted to a much more muted response. – Adam Chitwood “Another 48 Hrs.” Paramount Pictures The film is based on a true and controversial story, and while the sports angle is interesting, Pitt’s turn as a man filled with regret and shame hits you right in the gut. Directed by Bennett Miller and written by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, “Moneyball” charts former MLB flameout Billy Beane (Pitt) who’s now general manager of the Oakland Athletics and recruits a statistician with zero baseball experience (played by Jonah Hill in an Oscar-nominated performance) to help him shake up the team. – Drew Taylor “Moneyball” Sony Picturesīrad Pitt gives one of his best performances in the 2011 drama “Moneyball,” and you don’t need to know a thing about baseball to enjoy this Best Picture nominee. But it’s also more measured and – dare we say it? – mature than you’re probably expecting, with characters looking back on their lives and wondering, Is that it? Yes, that’s it. Jackson are all amazing) and Tarantino’s snappy dialogue, smartly interpolating Leonard’s similar tone. And a strong case could be made for “Jackie Brown.” For his much-anticipated follow-up to the zeitgeist-capturing (and Oscar-winning) “Pulp Fiction,” Tarantino chose an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 1992 novel “Rum Punch.” (It was his first and only movie based on a preexisting source.) Tarantino went to casting some of his heroes in the lead roles – Pam Grier, who made a name for herself starring in low-budget exploitation films for Roger Corman, plays the title role and Robert Forster, who appeared in cult favorites like “Alligator” and Disney’s misbegotten “The Black Hole.” It’s a twisty crime movie, for sure, with outstanding performers in supporting parts (Bridget Fonda, Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. ![]() You see, your iPhone can message all day long with Android phones, because between the carriers, and SMS messaging, that has evolved to be a relative piece of cake. ![]() So, cleverly, Apple created what might be one of the most useful hacks in SMS messaging of all time: they decided to use their iOS devices to do the job. You see, from a technical standpoint there was really no way for Apple to create direct communications between an Apple computer and an alien life form, namely an Android phone. Here is the most important thing to understand: even though it seems like your Mac is communicating directly with that Android user’s Android phone, it isn’t. (For those of you too young or too unnerdy to remember, the babel fish was a species of fish that would act as translators for beings who populated Douglas Adams’ science fiction book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (by the way, there is now a complete 6-volume set of all of the Hitchhiker’s Guide books available for just $30, which would make a great present for, well, lots of people, including teenagers and old geeks, you can see it here on Amazon). It’s almost as if there is a babel fish living inside your computer. It seems like your Macbook or Mac tower is almost magically exchanging messages with the Android device, even though they run completely different operating systems, and, in a sense, speak completely different languages. It’s important to understand how it’s even possible (which it didn’t used to be) for a Mac computer to communicate with an Android phone or other device. ![]()
At an engagement party the next day at Ashley's home, Twelve Oaks, a nearby plantation, Scarlett makes an advance on Ashley but is rebuffed however, she catches the attention of another guest, Rhett Butler. Scarlett is deeply attracted to Ashley Wilkes and learns he is to be married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. In 1861, on the eve of the American Civil War, Scarlett O'Hara lives at Tara, her family's cotton plantation in Georgia, with her parents, two sisters, and their many black slaves. Gone with the Wind is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and in 1989 became one of the twenty-five inaugural films selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Although the film has been criticized as historical negationism, glorifying slavery and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy myth, it has been credited with triggering changes in the way in which African Americans were depicted cinematically. It was re-released periodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popular culture. ![]() When adjusted for monetary inflation, it is still the highest-grossing film in history. It became the highest-earning film made up to that point, and held the record for over a quarter of a century. Gone with the Wind was immensely popular when first released. It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. At the 12th Academy Awards, Gone with the Wind received ten Academy Awards (eight competitive, two honorary) from thirteen nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Best Director (Fleming), Best Adapted Screenplay (posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard), Best Actress (Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress ( Hattie McDaniel, becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award). While the casting was widely praised, the long running time received criticism. It received generally positive reviews upon its release on December 15, 1939. Post-production concluded in November 1939, just a month before its premiere. The original director, George Cukor, was fired shortly after filming began, and was replaced by Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while taking some time off due to exhaustion. Sidney Howard's original screenplay underwent many revisions by several writers to reduce it to a suitable length. The role of Scarlett was difficult to cast, and 1,400 unknown women were interviewed for the part. The start of filming was delayed for two years until January 1939 because of Selznick's determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett, and concluded the following July. Gone with the Wind film had a troubled production. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era, the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara ( Vivien Leigh), the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, following her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes ( Leslie Howard), who is married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton ( Olivia de Havilland), and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler ( Clark Gable). ![]() Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Two sides battle for control of a map, fighting over specific points that a) control where players can respawn after meeting their demise and b) affect the number of spawns that side has available. We might have moved on from the Axis vs Allies of Battlefield 1942 to (hopefully) fictional modern-day conflicts between US Marines and the Chinese People’s Army or a ‘Middle East Coalition’, but the basic objectives are the same. How do you make the action feel even more epic, but still make the player feel they count? Amazingly, Battlefield 2 does exactly that.Īt heart the premise remains pretty simple. Some changes to the gameplay were needed, but when you’re cooking on a grand scale, you run greater risks when changing the ingredients. A change of setting and a new graphics engine might be enough for some developers, but not one of DICE’s ambition (Battlefield Vietnam only did the former, and was never a proper sequel). Which must have made the sequel a tricky proposition. With large maps that could cope with up to 64 players, a multitude of vehicles and a complex set of inter-dependent character classes, the game took the small-scale, bloodthirsty dramas of those earlier games and turned them into something operatic. Then, while the likes of Team Fortress, Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament showed the genre taking baby steps towards a more sophisticated, team-based gameplay, Battlefield 1942 took a deep breath and leapt forward. ![]() ![]() The first online 3D shooters gave us bursts of exhilarating action, but little real depth or tactical complexity. ![]() So, get ready to find and buy all your desirable products from your best-loved brands on Ubuy. The Sony RX10 includes both a built-in, popup flash strobe, and a hot shoe for external strobes. If you enable manual focus, however, the ring around the lens becomes a focus control, leaving zoom control to the rocker.įlash. Ordinarily, you can use either control for zoom adjustment, but the ring around the lens is both more accurate and faster. The zoom ring, like that for aperture control, is fly-by-wire rather than a mechanical linkage. There's also a dedicated zoom ring around the lens barrel, as well as a zoom rocker around the shutter button. ![]() (A particularly rare touch is the ability to switch between a stepped and a smooth, click-free rotation on the dial, courtesy of a switch on the bottom of the lens.) Don't be fooled, though: It's still a fly-by-wire design, even if it's a very nice one. Instead, the front dial is replaced by an aperture ring around the lens barrel as it did in the days of mechanical aperture linkages. It's not the traditional front-and-rear dial arrangement you'd find on most SLR bodies these days, though. It's not quite as versatile as side-mounted tilt/swivel displays, though, offering no help with self-portraits or shooting high / low shots in portrait orientation.ĭials and rings and levers (oh my!) The Sony RX10 sports a triple-dial design, if you count the combined multi-function controller / dial on the rear of the camera. It's great for shooting from the hip, low to the ground, or over your head, and makes the RX10 significantly more versatile than cameras with a fixed screen. The RX10's LCD is articulated in just the same way as that of the RX100 II, and allows tilting upwards by 84 degrees, or downward by 45 degrees. And this was also borne out in our real-world shooting with the camera, too: It focused quickly and confidently, and nailed focus right where we wanted it most of the time. Our lab testing found autofocus on the Sony RX10 to be as fast as most consumer DSLRs using phase detection. Regardless of the cycle rate, though, this new system clearly works. It's likely that contrast measurement is very fast, though, given how fast we know the array can be read (from the video processing mentioned elsewhere), and that we know the new BIONZ X processor has an enormous amount of processing horsepower to bring to bear. ![]() The NDA briefing was a little sparse on deep technical details for this, but if we understood correctly, Sony says that this hybrid system can complete 50,000 start-move-stop cycles per second(!) That's apparently how many cycles the focus-actuator system can perform per second, but it's not clear how many cycles the camera actually performs in practice, as clocking the image data off the array and performing the contrast measurement will add at least some time to the process, and we don't know whether the 50K/sec spec included the contrast measurement process or not. Apparently, the ultrasonic-wave motor is good at getting things moving, but not so good at stopping them, hence the need for a brake or "friction clamp", in the form of the piezo element. As it was explained to us, the piezo actuator in this case isn't so much operating as a driver, but rather as a brake. The RX10 uses a standard ultrasonic-wave motor to get the lens moving, but then uses a special piezoelectric actuator (borrowed from Sony's sensor-shift image stabilization technology) to stop the motion quickly and precisely. Sony developed a special hybrid actuator for the RX10, making dramatically faster AF cycles possible. It's a contrast-detect AF system, but the company has made major strides in AF speed, thanks to the combination of a CMOS sensor with very fast readout, a greatly-enhanced image processor, and an all new hybrid-drive AF actuator. When they briefed us on the RX10, Sony called particular attention to the new autofocus drive system it contains. For video capture, the system provides a greater corrective range Active Mode, in Sony parlance.įocusing. As you'd expect, Sony has included its Optical SteadyShot lens-based image stabilization in the RX10. There's also a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter, which can be deployed automatically or manually as needed to attain a slower shutter speed, or disabled if you prefer not to use it for a given shot. There's also a seven-bladed, rounded aperture, and a T* coating which reduces ghosting and flare. The lens' optical formula is not surprisingly quite complex, including 14 elements in 11 groups, of which seven elements are aspherics. There are a few limitations which we have mentioned like the somewhat clumsy X-bracket and lack of included wireless control but otherwise, the pros of this unit seem to outweigh any of these drawbacks.įinally, pricing, this unit currently sells for about $465 which is considered a sort of a mid-level price for a 100W flexible LED of this level and we can certainly recommend it. It is well built easy to transport and has a good output and fantastic color reproduction. In conclusion, the S-2610 is a very impressive light. In terms of output, we measured using our Sekonic C700 unit and got 2870 lux from 1m and 2480 lux it comes to color quality we tested both the average CRI (CRI Ra) measuring 96.2 and 97.7 We have also tested the specific CRI of different colors and you can see the results here and on our full review on LensVid – we were very impressed by the R9 (or red) which is between 97 and 98 with only the R12 (or blues) at around 75-85 depending on the color temperature. Now we move on to what is probably the most important part – performance. the Pocket Wireless DMX controller is still a very interesting unit regardless). For some reason we assumed it did during the review. Update: Swit told us that the Pocket Wireless DMX controller is not going to work with the S-2610 (which actually makes sense since it has no DMX connection. On the bright side, Swit does have a new Pocket Wireless DMX controller which can be used as a sort of remote and we are hoping to test it in the future. There is no remote or application to control the light which are quite common among some of the competition, although there is a 2.4GHz antenna that can be attached to the control box that will enable the user to cascade several units wirelessly and control them from a single control box (nice, but far less usable than a single unit remote in our view). One other thing that is missing is any sort of wireless control. X-bracket – we found a batter holding mechanism It is hard to mount and we came up with a much better mounting system using aluminum profiles. The S-2610 as an overhead light with extra diffusion in our studioĪlthough the design of the light and the control box is very good for the most part one thing which we would change is the X-bracket that comes with the unit. In our case, we are currently using it in our studio above our main work table with another layer of diffusion and we connected it directly to the wall using the supplied AC cable. The control box even has a V-mount connector on the back so you do not need to add one which makes the whole thing very compact. It made from only the waterproof flexible panel and the control box which is connected using a thick 4 pin cable (we would actually prefer a standard 3 pin XLR but this works fine as well). The unit is very simple compared to some of the older generation units from other manufacturers. ![]() ![]() From our testing, the actual color temperature of the light ranges between 5452K to 2938K and with the supplied diffuser it is just over 100K less. The S-2610 has over 500 small LEDs and it is continuously adjustable from 3000K up to 5600K. The S-2610 is the middle out of a family of three flexible LEDs by Swit which currently includes the S-2620 50W light and the S2630 150W unit (our S-2610 is as you might have guessed a 100W unit). ![]() This will be our second flexible LED that we have been testing here after the Intellytech FL-80 and it is interesting to see how the technology evolved (and actually keep evolving). The first was the mini V-mount battery that we really liked and still use and the second product that we will be testing today is the S-2610 flexible LED light. In mid-2018 we received several products for review from Swit.
